Tips to keep your home temperature comfortable
Replace your filters regularly. Check them every 30 days and replace as needed. If your home has tile floors or pets, then you may need to check them every 2 weeks. A dirty filter will cost you dearly in electric consumption and is the most common cause of compressor failure.
Clean your outdoor coil or have your system serviced at least once per year and have the technician check your coils. A dirty coil will cause your system to labor and eventually fail. In an overwhelming majority of cases you will need only to disconnect power and spray them mildly with a garden hose.
Let the system regulate itself. Find a comfortable setting on your thermostat and leave it alone as much as possible. If you wish you can purchase a programmable thermostat and set a household schedule for your heating and cooling comfort.
Read your electric bill. Sometimes a problem will make a noise, or leave you without cooling or heating- however your electric bill can tell you in advance if you are having a problem. Read your bill and look for any spikes over the previous year or month. If you are lacking a sufficient charge of freon, failing to replace filters promptly or suffering from dirty coils or other problems that will diminish the efficiency or your system it will show up on your bill. If you see a problem schedule a service call.
